project 1 - part 3(part 2)

 The Fruits of My Labor

What Changed

After my consultation in the Thing Tank, I was advised to hollow out as many of my leaf layers in case it was too heavy. I was also given guidance on how to lay out my cut for a bendable wood. So I tweaked my plans accordingly.

Assembly & What I'd Change

The process of putting this thing together was rather seamless, I didn't run into many issues aside from the assembly of the base. Until I was actually tasked with putting my pieces together, did I realized that I didn't have a way of keeping the tree parts tangent to the base, as well as keeping the top disk stationary while applying the bendy wood. So in the assembly, I decided to use a glue gun, instead of the Elmer's I used on the rest of the model, and just eyeballed it with the help of my sister. It worked out enough to hold everything together, but the model does lean slightly because of it. If I were to do this again I would cut out another one of the base's top disks (the one with a hole), to add on top of the bottom disk to give it more of an edge to hold onto. I would also cut out some levelers to keep the top disk from falling down during assembly. My steps for assembly were setting up the tree, attaching the tree to the base, gluing leaf layers together with spacers (halfway), gluing fish parts to the string, and gluing the now two parts of leaf layers together locking it off. I should also mention that I was originally going to use fishing wire instead of string for my fish, due to its transparency. But decided against it as my house was fresh out of our supply and no one in my family, myself included, goes fishing. So finding whatever string in my house to use instead of making a purchase on an item I'd only use once, seemed like the most financially sound decision for the project, as it wasn't really needed.
